The 2018 edition of Cowbellpedia
Secondary Schools Mathematics TV Quiz show and the search for the next inventor
opened with enthusiasm on Tuesday in Lagos as Promasidor Nigeria Limited marked
20 years relationship of Cowbell and Mathematics.
Speaking at a press briefing in
Lagos, Mr. Anders Einarsson, Managing Director of Promasidor Nigeria Limited,
explained to journalists that Cowbell Milk, the company’s flagship brand, has
been involved in the improvement of standard of education in Nigeria especially
the subject area – Mathematics in the last two decades.
The Cowbellpedia initiative comprises
of Cowbellpedia Secondary Schools Mathematics TV Quiz Show, Cowbellpedia Radio
(a Mathematics class on radio) and Cowbellpedia Mobile App (Mathematics Q&A
mobile application).
“These platforms have been able to
arouse and re-awaken the interest of students in Mathematics at the secondary
school level and further reinforced the importance of the subject,” he said.
To further sustain the growing
interest in Mathematics by the relevant groups, Einarsson informed that the
company launched the Cowbellpedia Compendium, a compilation of solved questions
from the past Cowbellpedia Secondary School Mathematics TV Quiz Show editions
for each category. This is to improve proficiency of students in Mathematics
and commemorate the 20th anniversary. The Cowbellpedia Compendium is also
available in e-book format.
Einarsson maintained that the Cowbellpedia Secondary Schools
Mathematics TV Quiz Show is open to students in JSS 3 and SSS2 from 10 – 18 years
of age attending full time secondary education in both public and private
schools in Nigeria.
While entry into this competition
is free, candidates have two stages to reach the final and win the
ultimate prizes. Stage 1 is the Qualifying Written Examination while Stage 2 is
the TV Quiz Show.
“For the Stage 1, we are continuing
with the initiative that we started in 2016 for mixed secondary schools to
nominate minimum two girls for each category to represent such school. This is
our own little way of encouraging the girl child to take interest in education
especially the Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) courses,” he said.
Einarsson also announced that the
company has raised the bar with a 100 percent increase of the prize money for
this year’s edition as winners in both categories would now receive =N=2,000,000
(Two million naira) and an all-expense paid educational excursion
outside the country, while the first and second runners-up would receive =N=1,500,000
(One million Five hundred thousand naira)and =N=1,000,000 (One
Million naira) respectively.
The teachers of the top prize winners
will win =N=500,000 (Five hundred thousand naira) while those
of the first and second runners-up will receive =N=400,000 (Four
hundred thousand naira) and =N=300,000 (Three hundred thousand
naira)respectively.
The Promasidor boss also assured that
the company would continue to stimulate the interest of young Nigerians in the
study of Mathematics and Cowbellpedia is a demonstration of its commitment to
the total development of the Nigerian child.
In his remarks, Abiodun Ayodeji,
Promasidor’s Marketing Manager, announced that registration for this year
is strictly online and the portal for registration is open and
would be closed on February 11, 2018 while the
qualifying examination would take place nationwide on Saturday,
February 17, 2018 at various designated centres.
Also speaking at the event, Dr.
Ikechukwu Anyanwu, Director of Quality Assurance, who represented the Registrar
of National Examination Council (NECO), praised Promasidor for the initiative
which he said has been of tremendous benefits to Mathematics education in
Nigeria.
The 2017 winners, Munachi Ernest-Eze
and Jesse Uche-Nwichi, also commended Promasidor for the opportunity offered to
them to horn their Mathematics skills through the Cowbellpedia Secondary
Schools Mathematics TV Quiz Show.
