Port
Harcourt-based company, Keves Global Leasing Limited, is partnering with the
Port Harcourt Literary Society as it hosts its maiden Poetry Slam in Port
Harcourt on Friday, May 25.
To
this end, the company is underwriting all the prizes, totalling N250,000.00, in
the poetry competition described as Nigeria’s biggest Slam. This includes the
N100,000.00 for the winner, N75,000.00 for the first runner-up, N50,000.00 for
the second runner-up and a youth prize of N25,000.00 for the best under-15 slam
poet from the secondary schools which benefit from the Society’s PHLS
Literature for Teens programme.
The
Managing Director/CEO of Keves Global, Chief Ikenna Okafor, who is also the
Chairman of the Rivers State Tennis Association, praised the Port Harcourt
Literary Society for bringing together some of Nigeria’s best spoken word
artistes in Port Harcourt, adding that the initiative will help restore the
Garden City to a place of importance in Nigeria’s literary and arts circles.
“What
you guys are doing is long overdue in Port Harcourt,” Chief Okafor, who is also
the Ide Akwaeze, in Anambra State, said. “This city needs to help showcase the
best of our talents to the world, be it in sports, such as tennis, which we are
trying to do, and in music, drama, and the arts, generally and all well-meaning
corporate organisations in Port Harcourt should support you.”
He
added: “We are happy to partner with you on this programme. That is why we have
decided to pay all the winners.”
It
will be recalled that award-winning actor, Dr. Sam Dede, had also announced an
additional prize for the best spoken word artiste during the Slam.
