2019 BUDGET: UPP Commends President Buhari’s Excellent Presentation, CONDMNS LAWMAKERS UNRULY BEHAVIOUR.

Chief Chekwas Okorie.
The United Progressive Party (UPP) commends President Muhammadu Buhari on his excellent performance in presenting the 2019 Appropriation Bill at the joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday 19 December, 2018. It is a budget of hope, consolidation and restoration that will take Nigerians to the next level.

The 63% performance of the 2018 budget is the highest in relative terms, that the nation has witnessed since the return of democracy in 1999. The economy is out of recession and fairly stabilized to usher in prosperity to the citizenry.

The giant strides in agriculture are almost revolutionary, the infrastructural development across the country is unprecedented despite the late passage of the 2018 budget by the National Assembly. President Buhari’s decision to complete abandoned projects awarded by previous governments not minding the obnoxious political leaning of beneficiaries of the contracts, is the hallmark of progressive leadership. It is patriotism at full display.

This further reaffirms and justifies the decision of the United Progressive Party (UPP) to support President Buhari’s reelection bid. Four more years of Buhari’s Presidency is essential in our collective quest for sustainable development in Nigeria.

The good performance of the 2018 budget under President Buhari’s watch is a pointer to a greater performance of the 2019 budget if reelected in the February 2019 Presidential poll.

The dishonourable conduct of those members of the National Assembly that unashamedly set aside a matter of national importance such as the budget presentation in favour of uncivil and rancorous behavior is a national embarrassment to say the least.

We have no doubt that the manipulation of elections since the return of democracy in Nigeria paved the way for some people of low character and poor upbringing to become members of the National Assembly, The Nigerian electorate is rational. Given a credible, transparent, free and fair elections, people who do not know the difference between partisan interests and matters of crucial national importance that transcend party lines will not be elected into the National Assembly to disgrace the nation in this manner. Freedom of legislators to express themselves in unfettered manner while sitting in the National Assembly is no excuse for rascality. The Hallowed Chambers of the National Assembly was thoroughly desecrated on December 19, 2018, a date that will go down in history as one of the lowest points in the history of our presidential democracy.

The clear implication of the primitive conduct of some members of the National Assembly is that the consideration and the passing into an Act of the national Assembly, of the 2019 Appropriation Bill shall be settled on partisan loyalty instead of the merits or demerits of the budget proposal. This is sad indeed.

We commend President Buhari for remaining focused during the budget presentation in spite of the distractions of these uncouth lawmakers. It reaffirms his strong determination to take Nigeria to the next level.

We further urge Nigerians to support his reelection bid and vote massively for him in the 16th February, 2019 Presidential election.
