A fourth time female member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Nkeiru Onyejeocha has decided to take the bull by its horn in her quest to attain one of the highest political positions of our time, as Speaker of the House of Representatives, a feat only achieved by just one woman in the history of Nigeria, that is, Rt. Hon. Patricia Etteh.

Hon. Onyejeocha, a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party, who only joined the All Progressives Congress, APC a few months back when the PDP Leadership in Abia State where she come from, fought and tried to destroy her political career, especially by those of them who felt the PDP in Abia should be in their individual pockets, laid political ambush for her, but being a smarter politician, she played strategical political football with them and in the last election, she defeated them and snatched back the House seat in their very eyes.

As Chairman, House Committee on Aviation, Nkiru on Monday, the 25th of March declared her intention to seek for the Speakership of the 9th House of Representatives and as a top ranking member of the house, she is eminently qualified to via for any position of her choice and she is very confident of winning if eventually the position of Speaker is zoned to the South- East by the Party.

According to her, “I am in this race to help advance the party’s developmental policies using the Next Level slogan under President Muhammadu Buhari and as the Law-maker representing Isiukwuato/ Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abaia State, I am a fourth timer in the House of Representatives, elected on the platform of ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the only female contestant so far in the race.

She promised to make use of her wealth of experience gathered over the last 12years to make huge differences in the in-coming 9th House of Representatives.

In similar development, the Coalition of South East Civil Society and Human Rights Organizations are drumming support for the candidacy of Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, who seem to be the only female in the race so far and the most qualified, even amongst her male counterparts.

In a statement signed by the conveners of the groups, Jasper Uche and comrade Ibuchukwu Ezike who are the conveners, the rights groups said that the All Progressives Congress (APC), being a national party should consider geographical spread and gender balance in all the political positions to deserving members in line with what the United States just did recently with the election of a female speaker, Nancy Pelosi.

Nkeiruka, according to the group is a “tested hand in legislative matters judging from her contributions in the last 12 years as a legislator in the green chambers with numerous legislative accomplishments which include the Anti-Turture Act, 2017, Compulsory Treatment and Care for Gun Shot Victims Act 2017, Local Government Autonomy Bill which was merged with the constitution amendment bills.

The group further described the lawmaker as “a woman of strong character” and that her achievements as current Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation speak volume”, coupled with her grassroot appeal, her interpersonal relationship with other legislators is a great asset to the APC and the country at large”.
