How on
earth would a governor be fraudulent all the time, trying to circumvent, maneuver
and take everything and all things for granted without bothering on the safety
of lives and properties of people around him, and to involve the person of the
Vice President of a country like Nigeria?
Imo State
Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha is one man known not to adhere, in all the
things he does and have done in the past 8 years to laid down rules and
regulations, quality control, with the outcome being dilapidation of roads and
buildings supposedly executed by him, which got him nicknamed “CHINA GOVERNOR”
at some point, especially when almost all the road projects by his
administration washes off within two to three months after construction,
meaning there is total breakdown in quality control and adherence to
regulations.
So,
on the 22nd of January, 2018, the President of the Council for the
Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN, Kashim Ali, while addressing the
Senate Committee on Works and Housing raised alerm that the Imo State
government has been engaging in acts that could lead to loss of lives. He said
that the Governor has been building bridges without engineering designs, and
plans.
Mr.
Ali said that when the Council got wind of what was happening in Owerri, they
visited to have meeting with the State government on the dangers of such
development but were rebuffed by the state officials.
“If
there is any calamity anywhere today, the expectation is that even if a mud house
collapses, the journalist will say ‘where are the engineers?’” Mr. Ali said.
“We
went there, we said, let’s see the design so that we can ascertain the
condition of these bridges. We made a plea, they refused to give us. We asked
for the engineers or anybody involved in this project so that we can at least
interview and know the integrity of the bridges, but we met brickwall.
It is
no news that some of those structures collapsed while there was no verifiable
information that the State government eventually allowed COREN to inspect their
projects.
Unfortunately,
some of the projects the Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo commissioned
are among those COREN labelled as disasters waiting to happen. If we do things
as we should, would the office of the Vice President or anybody called to
commission a project not insist they commission only fit, and completed
projects? Such act undermines quality governance.
As if
that was not enough Iberiberism, the outgoing governor of Imo State was busy
giving "valueless" awards to some of his ilk. In his verbose way of
doing things, he created his own award after the GCON ridiculously called Grand
Chancellor Order of Imo (GCOI) which he gave out to supposed friends.
As
part of his bridge mending strategy, he handed over a multi-million naira
mansion to his predecessor, Mr. Godson Ikedi Ohakim as a gift from the State.
This
is a Governor that is owing over 45 months in pension arrears which he refused
to pay after abusing the pensioners to 'go and die'. Yet he is 'dashing' a
mansion to his predecessor, who also looted enough to last him a life
time.
He
was busy giving awards to those he could not mold their statues. Even those
that it would take little materials like a wheel barrow of concrete to mold
their statues.
