Abiola and the declaration of June 12 as Nigeria's Democracy Day, adding that this landmark development is capable of galvanising our people for increased patriotism and commitment to national service.

"President Muhammadu Buhari - led Federal Government  deserves our commendation and congratulations for recognizing the onerous role of MKO Abiola in midwifing our democracy by making June 12 Nigeria's democracy day. It is an important milestone in the annals of Nigeria's democratic journey.

"I also congratulate the members of the National Assembly, the Nigerian Governors' Forum and every public-spirited Nigerian on the remarkable celebration of Democracy Day, a day set aside to celebrate the return to civil rule after decades of military rule", the statement said.

Dr. Obire also used the medium to urge those in positions of government to stop seeing the members of the opposition as enemies.

"The members of the opposition should not be seen or treated as enemies. They are the watchdogs that keep those in power in check and constructively criticize government policies perceived to be wrong. Both sides of the political divide are therefore partners in progress for a better Nigeria", the statement concluded.
