The Governor of Imo
State, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha CON has reassured workers of the state of the
commitment of his administration towards ensuring better working condition.
He made this known when
he undertook an unscheduled inspection of the state secretariat.
Speaking to the
jubilant workers after the tour, the governor said, "We decided to
undertake this visit to have a first hand appraisal of the state of the
facilities in this complex.
"As civil
servants, you need to be paid. I am of the believe that a worker deserves his
wages but the money has to be generated. There is need for justification for
the money we pay to you.
"I have come
first, to access the facilities here and see whether they are conducive for you
to give us return on investment and secondly, and more importantly, on your
part, we have a contract with you as your employer".
The governor,
accompanied by his deputy, Gerald Irona, Secretary to Government, Uche
Onyeagucha and heads of security agencies, tasked them to assist the government
towards generating revenue to enable it realize its the obligations.
He
said, "preliminary findings show that our source of revenue in the
state is thin. Apart from FAAC, the only source of revenue is internally
generated revenue and I am certain that you have a duty to help the
government generate revenue".
Continuing, he said,
"IGR in Imo is shrouded in scam. There were myriads of concessions, we
have been trying to find out whether those concessions were made in public
interest and if they are of any economic benefits to the state.
On workers salary, the
governor expressed willingness to pay the full salaries as against 80% by the
past administration. He said "my government will be ready and willing to
pay your full salaries but you have to match productivity with output. I am
aware that our indebtedness is huge and I have been notified that there will be
huge deduction from July. I am ready to do the adjustment to your salaries but
you have to tell me how we can make savings for it.
The governor equally
inspected facilities at the Justice Oputa Court complex where he noted that the
place was not yet ready for use owing to some structural defects, lack of
office furniture and equipment.
Responding, the Head
of Service, Barr. Ama Eluwa pledged the cooperation and willingness of the
workers to partner with the government in its quest to resuscitate the civil
service for better productivity.
