Buba Marwa. |
The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brigadier General Buba Marwa has been asked to either resign or be disgraced out of office just few months after his appointment by President Muhammdadu Buhari.
The call for his resignation is coming from a member of the House of Represenative, Bassey Eko Ewa who felt a statement credited to the NDLEA Boss to the effect that “one, in every seven Nigerians, is a drug addict” was a false claim as according to the Reps member, making such a claim with adequate figure to back up the claim was very unfortunate and unwarranted.
General Marwa was said to have made the statement when he paid courtesy call on the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently where the former military administrator of Lagos State, said that “One, in seven Nigerians, takes drugs.
According to him, “We have found out that there is a nexus between drug use and crime” but reacting to this this on Friday, Honourable Bassey Eko Ewa called on Marwa to tender his resignation letter immediately.
Bassey Ewa, who was Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly between 2003-2007, lamented what he called poor judgment of Buba Marwa as he he took serious exemption to such a wholesome submission that ‘one, in seven Nigerians, is a drug addict’ and asked, “Where did he get his statistics from?
There is no justification to what Marwa has said. It is not true in my Yakurr constituency. It is not true in my Cross River Central Senatorial District. It is not true in my Cross River State. It is not true in Reps and other parts of Abuja where I stay.
Continuing, Hon. Bassey Ewa said, “I have interacted with many Nigerians both home and abroad including the rich, middle class and the lower class. Nigerians are decent people. We are not a drug country and therefore called on “Buba Marwa must resign.
If his mission is to come to office and malign Nigerians by calling them drug addicts, the honourable thing for him to do is to resign immediately, he said as “It is this kind of statement from the likes of Marwa that scares investors away. These are the kind of statements that create negative impressions about Nigeria and Nigerians home and abroad.
According to Ewa, “Even if there are drug addicts, it does not translate to one out of seven Nigerians. Marwa has indicted whole lots of innocent Nigerians. He generalized without statistics. I call on the National Assembly to do the needful. He must be made to resign immediately,”
