The chairman of the Royal African Society, Ms Arunma Oteh has announced her support for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi.
Arunma
Oteh is a member of Global Leadership Council at Said Business School at the
University of Oxford, and a member of the London Stock Exchange Africa Advisory
Group, a former Treasurer and Vice President of the World Bank, former Director
General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigeria, and Group Vice
President and Treasurer at the African Development Bank.
As
Chair, Ms Oteh is responsible for leading the Council that sets the Society’s
strategic direction for the achievement of its mission and her would have a
renewable term of three years.
Oteh explained her support for Peter Obi via a
series of tweets on Sunday that she could not remain apolitical due to
Nigeria’s economic situation, stating that she had worked with Obi and could
categorically state that he stands out amongst all the other candidates.
One of her tweets reads: “My
choice is unequivocal and this is based on Peter Obi’s stellar track record. I
had the honour to serve with him on Nigeria’s Economic Management Team chaired
by the President and so my basis is not hearsay. He stands out, and Nigeria is
in a desperate situation.
“The
stakes for Nigeria are too high. I cannot, in good conscience, sit on the
fence. The situation is desperate and Nigerians will need to work hard to
#TakeBackNaija.”
Oteh went on to lament the state of the country, adding that 62 years after
independence, 100 million Nigerians were still living in poverty.
Another of her tweet reads: “No
country can afford corruption, and certainly not Nigeria, a nation of 200
million with 100 million living in poverty almost 62 years post-independence
despite huge resources and enormous talent.”
