The Senator representing Adamawa North, Ishaku Abbo, has sponsored a bill for the creation of a creative economy commission.
In a statement on Wednesday, the lawmaker said the bill had scaled through the first reading.
He said it was relevant to open up the entertainment sector as a stable and reliable revenue source for the government.
Recall that Abbo while, visiting the family of Mohbad, promised to sponsor the bill to harmonise critical issues affecting stakeholders in the sector.
Abbo who is also the Chairman Senate Committee on Creative Economy, noted that the commission was expected to look into disputes within the entertainment industry such as disputes between artists and record labels.
He disclosed that the commission would be a regulatory body for the entertainment industry the way the Nigerian Communication Commission is in the telecommunications industry, and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission is in the broadcasting industry.
Abbo stressed the need to make the sector more viable and beneficial for all operators as well as generate revenue for the country.
He said, “I am sponsoring the bill and it is a bill that is dear to me. It is a bill for an act to establish the Creative Economy Commission in bill number 2023 SB 124. The bill will open up the entertainment sector as a stable and reliable revenue and employment source for Nigeria through the development of entertainment hubs in each state in Nigeria.
‘’It will also be a regulatory body for the entertainment industry like we have NCC in the telecommunications industry and NBC in the broadcasting industry. The Commission will also look into disputes within the entertainment industry such as disputes between artists and record labels.”
The Governor of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria, PMAN, Lagos State chapter, Ara Olamuyiwa had in an interview on Arise News called on the Senator whom she met during PMAN's condolence visit on the mother of MohBad to expedite action to see that the bill sees the light of day as it is expedient for the industry and practitioners in it to feel safe practising in Nigeria.
